Marathon Oil

The Project

The UK North Sea represents one of the key areas of operation in Marathon Oil’s global portfolio. Marathon’s main assets are located in the Brae oil and gas production complex, where production from six fields is centred on three major platforms.

Marathon decided that it was important to employ the most advanced safety technology available and recognised the inherent benefits of electronic systems, leading to increased efficiency and a greater support of safety best practice.

The Choice

Engica were selected because Marathon required a system with the flexibility to be configured to fit its existing hard copy documents and business processes, while also possessing powerful functionality including a graphical permit dashboard and comprehensive isolation management.

Meeting the Challenges

Engica’s project team worked in close partnership with Marathon offshore to pilot the software and implement a smooth changeover from a paper to an electronic system. A custom built e-learning and training course and awareness campaign prior to go live ensured immediate familiarity with the new system amongst staff and contractors.

Kerr McGee & CNOOC

FPSO

The Project

In the last 10 years Kerr McGee Corporation, in partnership with the China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) has worked to create a core area for the exploration and production of oil in China’s Bohai Bay.

A 900-foot FPSO with the capacity to produce up to 80,000 barrels of oil per day and 350,000 barrels of gross liquids is used in combination with two fixed platforms for dry wellheads.

With field development underway and a tight deadline to reach first production both partners recognized that it was vital to have tightly integrated Safety and Maintenance Management systems in place in time for project start-up.

The Choice

Engica’s Q4 product suite was selected because of its capacity for tight integration of maintenance, logistics and safety systems into a single cohesive unit. Experience in implementing projects on time to very tight schedules was also a deciding factor, along with Q4's user friendliness, and the ability to provide dual language software and training in both English and Mandarin.

Since the Global Producer VIII FPSO became fully operational the software has become a fundamental element of Kerr McGee and CNOOC’s operational strategy and provides a powerful tool for safe and efficient work offshore.

Baglan

The Project

GE’s Baglan Bay power station features the world’s first installation of the latest advanced gas turbine combined-cycle technology, known as the H System. As the flagship site for the new state of the art technology it was decided that world beating CMMS & Safety systems were required to match the plant's high level of technical sophistication, and that the selection of best of breed software with a proven history of high performance was crucial.

The Choice

GE chose Engica to provide an integrated solution featuring maintenance, logistics and safety management systems due to Engica’s proven track record of successful implementations. The powerful functionality contained within Q4 was another key factor in the project award.

Meeting the Challenges

During completion of the plant Baglan Bay decided to use Q4 Stock & Procurement to manage the final stages of construction, ensuring that the stock system was already fully in place before the power station began full operation. In the next phase of the project Q4 Engineering was implemented, with the Engica project team participating directly in the implementation to get the system up and running, and Q4 Safety followed shortly after.

Since implementing Q4 at Baglan Bay GE has also installed the software at its Great Yarmouth and Sutton Bridge sites.

Phu My 3

Plant

The Project

Currently the largest plant in Vietnam with a capacity of 720 MW (8% of Vietnam’s total installed capacity) Phu My 3 comprises of two V94.3A gas turbines, one steam turbine and three generators, and is wholly owned by BP as part of the Phu My industrial complex.

BP required a fully integrated CMMS software suite with engineering, stock and safety permit-to-work all running from a single database to optimise maintenance operations for Phu My 3.

The Choice

After a rigorous selection process examining all available options Engica was named as the chosen solution provider. BP’s decision was based on Engica’s ability to quickly and economically customise and integrate key aspects of the Q4 product. Another deciding factor was the power of the software to support demanding requirements in complex maintenance operations, while remaining user friendly and requiring minimal training.

Meeting the Challenges

The project was completed in 6 months, with local implementation assistance from an Engica Vietnamese Partner company ensuring a smooth transition to final operation. Q4 provides a comprehensive and effective solution by allowing the CMMS to be located on a central server, and due to its user friendly interface has become an invaluable tool to Phu My staff in day to day plant operation.

Eastern Energy

The Project

TXU is one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the world with assets of $80 billion. In Australia TXU Networks Electricity Distribution System services the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne and the eastern half of Victoria, consisting of an extensive transmission network covering a wide area.

TXU decided after a review of its existing management systems to take advantage of the latest technology available to manage the maintenance of their electrical assets across 15 main sites.

The Choice

Following a thorough analysis TXU selected Engica due to the close fit of Q4 Engineering with TXU’s detailed system requirements and the flexibility of the software. The capability of Q4 to manage TXU’s linear assets spread over a vast area, along with Engica’s highly successful track record in previous installations across a broad range of industries, were also important elements of the project award.

Meeting the Challenges

A rationalisation of technical and business requirements to maintain and support the asset maintenance capabilities of the TXU Networks group was undertaken. Another fundamental aspect of the project involved the mapping of TXU’s linear assets such as high and low voltage lines and cables. Engica were able to quickly set up a powerful linear maintenance facility linked to spatial locations for this purpose. Following the successful implementation Q4 is now a key element of TXU’s operating strategy.

The Project

Croda is part of Croda International Chemicals, a world leader in the manufacture of specialty chemicals for the Personal care, Home care, Health care, Industrial and polymer markets with a global presence, and a major supplier of raw materials to a wide range of industries.

Croda identified a need to improve control of assets and maintenance schedules at their UK facilities. Part of Croda’s business aims were to switch from corrective to preventative maintenance, improve and integrate stock control, and reduce breakdowns and associated costs.

The Choice

Croda wanted a CMMS system that offered power and flexibility but was also user friendly, with a straightforward and logical process flow and an easy to grasp user interface. The comprehensive functionality of Q4, which was able to accommodate the main requirements of a large chemical manufacturer, and Engica’s approach towards the handling of software sales as individual projects convinced Croda of the benefits of selecting Engica.

Meeting the Challenges

The success of the project lay in the flexibility of Q4 software to fit Croda’s unique business processes, ensuring that all key requirements were met. However, the most important factor was the partnership approach employed by Engica in working closely with Croda to achieve a well managed project.

The Project

Ethicon is a global medical device company that operates in 52 countries as part of Johnson & Johnson, one of the world's largest manufacturers of healthcare products.

Ethicon required a CMMS to organise and provide increased control over maintenance activities. With cost reduction and quality improvement being of paramount importance, Q4 was seen as a crucial element in taking Ethicon forward. Ethicon also needed a system which offered an instrument calibration control facility to maintain and manage its electrical and mechanical equipment subject to traceable calibration procedures.

The Choice

Ethicon carried out an extensive review process of various maintenance management systems before selecting Engica. Q4’s ability to incorporate equipment calibration as part of the software’s functionality, along with Engica’s extensive client base and project history played a key role in the contract award.

Meeting the Challenges

Engica and Ethicon worked very closely in partnership to ensure that all project expectations were fully met. Since implementation of the new system, uptake amongst Ethicon’s staff has been highly positive and the software has delivered strong improvements in both quality and cost reduction.

The Project

Nissan’s Sunderland car plant is now the largest in the UK and one of the most modern car plants in Europe. Nissan decided to replace their existing mainframe system with a high quality top end CMMS and saw the project as crucial to the maintenance initiatives of the company.

The new system would have to meet the needs of a large number of users, and Nissan required a provider who would be fully responsive to their needs and able to provide software, implementation, training, and support to exacting specifications.

The Choice

Engica’s philosophy of delivering systems as part of a structured implementation approach designed to deliver maximum engineering and business benefits to stringent timescales was a crucial factor in the final decision. Nissan recognised that Engica possessed the experience and flexibility to implement a large scale project of this type to tight deadlines and to provide the necessary level of support to get the system up and running effectively.

Meeting the Challenges

The fast track implementation was a significant achievement because of the size of Nissan’s assets. The success of the installation was largely attributable to the close working relationship between Nissan and Engica to get the project up and running.

The Project

Britvic is one of Britain’s largest soft drinks producers with brands including world renowned names such as Pepsi, Tango, and 7Up. Britvic currently operates six factories and 15 depots around the UK.

Britvic required a centralised computer system to organise maintenance activities, as previously each site looked after its own maintenance, and there was no meaningful communication between sites.

There were duplicated items of equipment and it was necessary to implement a system that could instantly determine the availability of spare parts at all sites in the event that an unexpected replacement was required.

The Choice

Following a rigorous selection process Britvic chose Engica after being highly impressed by seeing existing live systems in action, and the numerous positive testimonials of other users on the benefits Q4 had brought to their operations. Q4’s compatibility with other systems and adaptability to future IT developments also played a considerable role in winning the contract.

Meeting the Challenges

Following integration with Britvic’s financial package, Q4 went live at Britvic sites across the country only 4 months from project award.

A great deal of effort went into identifying exactly what was required by Britvic to ensure that the software would present a close match to requirements, and it was this strong communication between Engica & Britvic's project staff that laid the foundation for a successful implementation which surpassed all expectations.

National Air Traffic Services

Control

The Project

National Air Traffic Services (NATS) provides air traffic control services at 14 of the UK’s major airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow.

NATS identified a requirement in each of its business areas for a job and resource management system with a consolidated database for all airports. The aim was to achieve more efficient maintenance processes and reduced operating costs through greater monitoring of performance.

The Choice

Engica were awarded the project due to their expertise in precise project planning, and extensive experience in consolidation of numerous remote systems to form a central monitoring and analysis facility. Additionally, the fact that Q4 provided the closest fit to NATS requirements and could be configured with a minimum of effort and cost was a key factor in the selection. The award was sealed by Engica’s intuitive Q4 user interface, as ease of use played a prominent role in the evaluation criteria.

Meeting the Challenges

Following a pilot installation, systems were then implemented at all 14 airports. Data from the local installations was consolidated to form an information resource, providing the Airport Engineering support sites with an airports wide view on the performance of the operational systems and equipment

Nexus

Metro

The Project

Nexus is the Passenger Transport Executive for Tyne & Wear, one of the seven major PTEs in the UK outside London. The Metro began operating in 1980 as the UK’s first light rapid transit system, and now has an impressive 100km (62 miles) of track connecting 58 stations. More than 40 million passengers a year use the metro for their transport needs.

Nexus was looking for a computerised system to organise maintenance across its entire network including communications & signals, track maintenance, overhead cables and substations. Integrated Stock and Procurement was also an essential element to support this.

The Choice

Nexus selected Engica due to the close fit of Q4 Engineering and Stock with Nexus’ detailed system requirements. Nexus also determined Q4 could provide the flexibility to manage the unique maintenance needs of the Metro system over a wide network area, and because of the software's n-tier architecture could be easily configured to incorporate developments and meet Nexus’ future needs.

Meeting the Challenges

Since project implementation, Q4 has become a valuable component of Nexus’ maintenance operations, delivering a noticeable return on the investment in project man hours and initial cost of getting the system up and running. Nexus have since upgraded to more recent versions of Q4, taking advantage of extensive increases in Q4 software functionality.
